Some bird pics to share

Post by harlequin2902 »

Hi all,

Went for a walk at Marina City Park this afternoon to try out the Nikon D70. Here are some pics to share with you guys.

These were taken with a Nikon D70 at 450mm, f/5.6, ISO400. Hand held.

The Collared Kingfishers (yup, there were 2 of them flying around in the same tree !)

nice photos, samuel.
yeah, these birds are often seen in pairs, making a lot of noise, probably courting.
you have steady hands! very sharp for handheld.
what's with the ringed highlights in the last photo? what lens were you using?

Must be the side effects of my attempt to digitally reduce the effects of chromatic abberation.

I was using just a very basic Nikon 70-300 G f/4.5-5.6 zoom lens.
< S$200 in the used market :D

Great shots! I like the first one best. The deep blue sky makes it feel that it was taken in some temperate country.

How about some astrophotos next?

Hm, I'm afraid I don't really have the proper supporting equipment for that at the moment (EQ mount, pier, drives) :( Oh well, maybe next time. Right now, I just want to concentrate on taking better nature shots first. There is still much to learn from the real bird photographers out there.

hi sam,
maybe its the astro training but the first thing I noticed is the blue sky...a pity it did not stay blue for very long. let's hope Sat night will not disappoint!
Got a wedding dinner to attend, so can join in any session after 12am!

btw, these images are good...a marked improvement over your previous attempt..good focus, colour and contrast.

Here are a couple of pics from today's session at Botanical Gardens.

These 2 are fairly common species in the Swan Lake neighbourhood.

Pardon the noise in the 2nd pic. This is due to digital sharpening using P.S :)

Your shots are getting quite good. I am sure you must be very happy with your D70. :-)

I think your shots would look even better if you had waited for the birds to turn to face you.

Hi, thanks for the compliments. (hm...but these 2 were the only ones that passed Q.C ... out of a whole batch of 40 + )

For every species encountered today, about 15 exposures were made for each (I should have done more, but I was limited by my 128mb memory card... ). In the process, a few different 'poses' were captured but unfortunately many had to be junked during processing due to blurring caused by camera shake or overly rapid movement of the bird while a slow shutter speed was used. I think I should try an early morning shoot the next time. The lighting conditions will be much better than what we had today.

not too bad la, considering u only using the 70-300g. bokeh quite bad wor, maybe u can go ps and apply more blur to the background. a tighter crop would be better. since u so into bird photography, when u going to buy that 80-400vr. :D
