Mersing Astro Expedition 27 Aug 2011 to 29 Aug 2011

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Mersing Astro Expedition 27 Aug 2011 to 29 Aug 2011

Post by shirox »

This is our fourth expedition to Mersing, this time round we have a bigger group going.
A couple of days before 27th, a typhoon was around Philippines region and we were worried if it will affect our astro trip.
It was raining hard on our way there and also on the second night.
As soon as we reached the site, there were pockets of blue and as night came, we caught a glimpse of the comet and some huge fireballs!!!! it was quite a sight to see it exploded in the atmosphere and travelled between the clouds.

Anyway, I only managed to take 1 shot of gamma cygni and this is processed without flats, without darks.

FSQ85, GM8, CLS filter+500D with cooling, 1 x 8min, ISO800

Fireballs! Wow.

How was the comet like? Was it obvious in the eyepiece? Did you see any tail? (I assume you're referring to Comet Garradd.)

It was quite early in the night, so all I see was a fuzzy globe lol

Yes highlight of this trip was the comet, quite a sight with the 12.5" dob.

As far as astrophotography is concern, not productive at all for this trip. Only managed to capture 2 subs for the Western Veil / NGC 6960 when the clouds rolled in, you can see a less than satisfactory image below from an apparent lack of sufficient data. But nevertheless, it did provide a good shakedown for my new imaging setup.

Imaged with: AP MACH 1 GTO, 8" Orion UK f/4.5 Newtonian, Baader MPCC, Modified 350D with cooling , 2x6 min @ ISO 800

Guys, great pictures even though you only have such a short period of time to take them.
