Observation at Toa Payoh Park 10/9/2011??

Post by Gary »

Update: Event cancelled due to bad weather. Better luck next time. :)

Hi Friends. It's that time of the year again. Mooncake festival (aka Mid-Autumn Festival).

Date: Saturday, 10th Sept 2011
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Toa Payoh Town Park

Google Map:

Google Street View showing the carpark inside the park:
http://maps.google.com.sg/maps?q=toa+pa ... 52,,0,6.33

This is just interest check for this event. Those who can make it please add your name (with or without scope). Thanks!

There is Mooncake festival organised by Toa Payoh Central. The VIP is the Defence Minister. Unlike the previous year, I did not liase with the RC Committee due to time constraints (damn bekok trip! :P) and also the flexibility to call it off last minute if the weather is bad. Also, I am a bit under the weather now and hope to fully recover and regain my voice by then.

There will be a stage set up for performances and a lantern walkround session.

Since the park is big enough, we can find a place that will not obstruct the human traffic generated by the RC event. When the lantern session begins, those who are interested to take a look at the telescopes, will naturally join the queue.

Unlike the previous year at the open area outside the public library, the town park is overall darker. The Moon will not be full on that day which means there is still a terminator on it worth looking at. Also, the Moon will be up before the sky turns dark (unlike previous year whereby we have to wait until 10 pm).

Depending on the scopes deployed that night, we can have a couple for Moon and a couple for other goodies. Moon will be located some distance away from the Saggi-Scorpio sweet spot. Those who can stay later after 11 pm++ can continue to observe Jupiter. Jupiter GRS will transit 2.08 AM the following morning (Sunday).

Regarding the carpark inside the park, managed to spoke to the friendly parking valet and gathered the following info:
- the carpark is is leased by the restaurant (Oasis Taiwan Porridge Restaurant) for its clients and employees from nparks
- non-diners can temporarily unload stuff just outside this carpark (see the lorry in the google street view above) and then drive further up to park at the HDB carpark
- dinners can park they car inside for free until 6 am as long as they dine in the restaurant. The restaurant closes at 6 am.

For those taking public transport, you can take a train or bus to Toa Payoh MRT station or bus interchange and take a 2 minutes walk to the park. Scroll around the following google street view to familiarise yourself the relatively positioning between the bus interchange and the park:

http://maps.google.com.sg/maps?q=toa+pa ... .25,,0,5.1

You have 2 options. (1) Get out of the aircon bus interchange and look for the bridge. Then, just cross the traffic light under the bridge to the park. (2) While inside the bus interchange, take a flight of stairs to the 2nd level where the Popular bookshop is located. There is a glass door right beside Popular near the flight of stairs. That is the entrance to the bridge you see in the google street view. Walk across the bridge and you will end up in the park.

If Zong is coming, we can also throw him a farewell party. He will be our VPOST very soon. :P

My saturday evening has been postponed. So if the weather is clear tomorrow, it will be a go ahead. :)

Hope the farmers in Sumatra can give chance. :P

If Moon is clear, the Vallis Schroteri is one of the highlights:
