Draconids 2011

Post by jiahao1986 »

Went back to hometown in China to watch this meteor shower, which was predicted to reach an hourly rate as high as 500+ at around 4:00am on Oct.9.

The actual night came with terribly hazy and cloudy sky after sunset. Waited till 2:00am when the sky suddenly cleared up with good transparency. Limiting mag. was at least 6.5 at this in-the-middle-of-nowhere ranch.

Two peaks, respectively at 2:00am and 4:00am were observed, where the latter indeed reached a rate of 400+ per hour at the exact predicted time. Despite the very low altitude of the radiant (8 degrees), I managed to see 69 Draconids meteors within 2 hours. Below is the statistical result of the peak timing and rate by IMO:

Most meteors are VERY faint (between mag 2 to 4), and VERY VERY slow. The meteors were so slow that you can blink a few times and the meteor's still there. There were 3 times when more than 2 meteors came grazing through at the same time, a long gone experience since the 2001 Leonids. During the 2 hours there were a few Orionids members, hinting a potential good show next week.

This is a shot near the radiant in the north. A total of 18 meteors are captured. Two of them are bright enough to leave persistent trains. Animations of the train drifting will be posted in the third reply.

Before astronomy twilight came I pointed the camera to the east and south, with a hope to capture some long meteors with the Zodiacal Light and Milky Way as backdrop. Quite a few meteors went into the field of view but most were faint. Only two bright members were captured. One was bright enough to leave a very big train.

Cropped and labelled version to show the meteors more clearly:

Two of the meteors in the first photo above left persistent trains and I managed to create some animations showing how they drift with upper level wind:

Another train was captured in the south without the mother meteor showing up. Given the very slow speed of Draconids meteors, the mother meteor is most likely to ba an Orionids which appeared during the 1-second interval between two shots.

Hi JiaHao. Btw, what is the golden rectangular object at the bottom right hand corner in the first 2 photos? Solar panel?
