Wooden tripod

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

By the way, I think most people will prefer wooden tripod, because more stable and smaller damping time
I'm still looking for wooden surveyor tripod (that can take up to 30kg load). My heavy duty aluminum tripod (bought from homely supermart in ubi) can only take up to 15kg, not rigid enough for my c8 ota and my unistar alt-azi mount.

Hi Arief,

I have not seen a wooden survey tripod for quite some time. How heavy is the C8 OTA? How about using those tripod damping pads/discs?

Hi Kayheem, arief here. Total weight of my C8 OTA, 10x60mm finder, 6x30mm finder (yes, i'm using two finders, temporary before i get my telrad), dewshield, unistar mount, diagonal and eyepiece is about 13kg. The aluminum tripod is barely sufficient. Haven't tried using the pads.

the thread is too long for my unistar mounting post.
doesn't look like a standard surveyor's 5/8"-11 thread size as well.
asking price is outrageous!!!

Hi Arief,

You can check out the 'Industrial & Commercial Guide' (not the 'Buying Guide') Yellow Pages for companies that deal in surveying equipment. As I said, I do not see wooden tripods being used by road-side surveying teams anymore. I don't think surveying instruments are as heavy as your C8!

Sam (Harlequinastro) has the tripod with steel legs for the HEQ5. Ask if he can loan it to you for testing.

why dun u buy Uncle Al's oak tripod? Think it's only US200++ and it's the best around....

Or alternative, use a pier.....more stable than anything else.

Hi Arief,

I came across this website:

http://www.alsastro.com/oak_tripod.htm

Hope this helps.

Hi there:

Looking for a used surveyors' wooden or aluminium tripod, try looking for them at Sungei Road 2nd hand market or some junk yard behind Defu Lane, you may find what u need there at a good bargain!
