Invitation to An Introduction to Digital Astrophotography

Post by rcj »

An Introduction to Digital Astrophotography (repeat, second session!)
Saturday, 30 June, 5.30pm – 9pm
Programme Zone, Jurong Regional Library
[Organized by the National Library Board]

Photography of the night sky can be an extremely fascinating hobby revealing the spectacular beauty of the celestial sky. It can simply involve a camera mounted on a tripod, or as complicated as you want to make it with liquid-cooled CCD cameras, or even robotically controlled telescopes. Although astrophotography is a very easy hobby to get started on a simple level, it can be difficult to master at its highest level. One must be prepared to be patient and spend time learning the craft.

In this workshop, one will learn how to start out easy, from shooting star-trails with camera on tripod, to the intermediate level of prime-focus astrophotography where one can shoot with a camera attached to a telescope, taking objects like the moon and planets. Questions like, "What kind of telescope should I use?", "What camera?", "What ISO and exposure time?", and the most famous of all: "How do I focus this thing!", will be answered during the workshop, together with a whole lot more of basic astrophotography enlightenment.

At the end of the workshop, all participants get to select their best image, and have them exhibited at the library.

Workshop Programme

5.15pm - Registration of participants
5.30pm - Theory session
6.30pm - Break
7pm - Set-up of astrophotography equipments outside library
7.30pm - Practical session

Workshop Speaker
Since secondary school, Remus Chua has been pointing telescopes toward the night sky. Growing up over here in Singapore, the night skies were light-polluted, but trips to darker spots like beaches, reservoirs, grass fields, and in remote areas of Malaysia kept Remus's interest in astronomy through his teenage years. Remus is also actively involved in organizing astronomy expeditions that include trips to various locations in Peninsula Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand for purposes of astronomical outreach, digital imaging, meteor showers, and planetary observations.

Since 1990, Remus has taken an avid interest in the various fields of astronomical imaging, ranging from emulsion (film), CMOS, to CCD deep sky imaging, with the data acquisition of information including the wide-field panoramic expanse of the Milky Way to the narrow-field record of galaxies and planetary nebulae. He has also taken a keen interest in the areas of planetary and solar system high resolution imaging. These images have been featured in numerous astronomy magazines, books, websites, and public displays. Remus loves to show how amateurs achieve professional results combining art and technology by giving invited talks throughout Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand. Last year, Remus's astrophotography works have also been featured in the special edition of THE UNIVERSE, hosting a compilation of the world's best astrophotography imagery.

Have sent an email to ilyani - and got a reply that she is out of office till 15 May ... hopefully she will include me in the workshop by the time she is back. See how desperate i am to chope a seat!

Separately, Remus - much appreciation for conducting the workshop. Learning astrophotography by trolling the internet and reading books is a slow and oftentimes frustrating process, especially with un co-operative Singapore skies. Kudos to you for sharing!

Many thanks for that maguro77! Preps for the workshop almost done, not sure how is the response from NLB side so far. Ilyani will be updating the status to all participants pretty soon, I'm sure! See you soon!

Also thanks to Mariner for signing up as well!

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Latest update from NLB: Workshop has been oversubscribed. Many thanks for the interest expressed for this event! Might have an opportunity to have a separate second session to cover the response. If there is, will let everyone know of the date for the second workshop (ie if NLB approves). As for those attending the original workshop, you should be able to know by end of this week or early next week. Again, much appreciated! Cheers!
