SBIG 8300C hot pixels

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

SBIG 8300C hot pixels

Post by orly_andico »

I've been using GRAS / iTelescope (pricey [smilie=beaten.gif]) to capture images for my coursework which is due in a couple days.

Ran into a terrible issue. NOISE!! so much noise that the dark frame couldn't get rid of it..

Check out this single 10-minute sub..

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/63497702/T20-o ... 00-001.fit

can you guys see all the hot pixels? are all Kodak 8300 sensors like that? or is GRAS' copy busted?

that's some terrible noise for a camera that's sitting at -20 Centigrade. Heck my QHY8 has FAR less noise at 20 minutes and it doesn't even get below zero....

sub looks ok to me. may I know how did u view it to see the hot pixels?

what i have done was to open the fits file in Liberator, convert to TIFF, and then open in PS5. Done some preliminary quick stretching and "surveyed" the data. It does seem noisier then it should (or at least compared to two of my ST8300M ever owned at 0 deg), but nothing to worry much about. But if it is taken from dark skies, would expect it to have richer data. I have taken this region (Mark Chain) from Mersing before, and 5-10min subs have more info. Hmmmm!! But anyway, I think it is still a good image. I am going it from the mac platform though. Let me know and i could pass u the jpg stretched version to investigate.

hi Remus

that sub was taken from New Mexico Skies at 2200m with an average FWHM of 1.7" (I rented the scope) so yeah... really dark skies. That is unprocessed (no flats, darks, or bias).

i have a 3hour 20min stack (that is one of the frames) and it goes down to mag 20 (I was able to pick out the tiny galaxies VCC 1065 and SDSS J122805.07+133304.8 near IC 3382). But it's not colorful... need to refine my processing skills some more.

You can write your own programs to remove the hot pixels.

Results of a simple program written in just 10 minutes, after stretching in ps. 100% crop.

yeah a lot of programs can remove hot pixels. no need to write one's own.

my issue is that.. there seem to be A LOT of hot pixels. my QHY8 has much less, admittedly the sensor is 2X the area and it has less megapixels, but it also doesn't cool as much. I was frankly surprised at the number of hot pixels as the 8300C is not exactly cheap - the QHY8 costs much less.
