Depends on how you drive.
If you drive normally, fearing the "uncles" with their speed cameras, the journey would take around 3 hrs from JB to Mersing town. Thereafter about half an hour to the observation site. Its next to the sea on a grazing land.
However, if you drive like Matthew, then you can be there in 1.5-2 hrs. (his car comes with warp engines)
Try to leave earlier like 12pm , to factor in possible jams, toilet/food break, etc and arriving there with sufficient light to set up and relax for a while to catch the first star of the night.
DON'T FORGET HEAT PACKS AND MOSQUITO SPRAY!!
