Unedited Solar Images from Jan 2012 onwards

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Hi,All
Thanks Gary for the upload.Do take note the formation of the bright band(both north and south) in Cak view of the sun in the 29 july 2012 photo.By 'coincidences' great floods--taiwan,etc.Also,do note the more frequent M class and above flare and strange shaped prominences on the sun.Whatever it brings,at least we can enjoy the show here in Singapore! Thanks for watching.

Hi,All
On the 4 Aug 2012,a hugh filament appeared on the sun.At the start, its more than 400,000km long
and appear to be a dividing line between two sunspot regions--group sunspot1535,1537 and group sunspot
1538,1540,1544.It will stay that way till 13 Aug 2012 when the whole filament get rotated to the
other side of the sun.On closer look with the Cak,2.2A bandwidth scope it become obvious that this
filament is actually forming a "bridge" between these 2 bright Cak regions.Between 4 to 6 Aug it grows
to almost the length of the radius of the sun(sun diameter 1,392,000km) of 600,000km plus and exploded
occassionally..As can be seen from the photos, there is a substantial reduction in size --on 7 Aug 2012's photo.
Cak photo review a secret--the two bright Cak regions are still there! As expected this again fuel that filament to
expand again and it expand, contract while maintaining a minimum size of approximatly 400,000km
throughout and maintain as a "bridge" between the two sunspot regions.
This is --one of the--most stable of the large filament in this cycle 24.Other filaments of that size normally
dont survive more than 7 days Another amazing fact is that it form a bridge between two bright active regions
and may had serve as a energy release mechanism. Also, this review another secret of the sun--it may be
inactive in terms of flares, sunspots sizes etc(note, recently sunspot size are generally small sized);but if
examined in Cak,hugh bright regions may coexits with these small spots and such bright Cak regions are
usually accompanied by filaments. Some of these filament are visible only using Ha,<0.5A bandwidth scope.
In fact hugh regions of bright Cak regions totalling in area greater than a band across the sun's surface
frequently occurred this month and as expected severe 'bad weather' exists.
Also note that this filament is one of those rare filament with a Cak profile which show up on the photo
of 13 Aug 2012.
Meanwhile, hope you enjoy the photos and thanks Gary for uploading such a large batch of photos--21 in all.
Thanks Gary.

Hi,All
The newest photos should be uploaded anytime.Description of it will come later.Pls note that this is the last batch of to-date photos.Later, there might be a delay of 2 weeks or more due to 'no access to internet'.Thanks to the recent exam, the recent access to internet thr my kids computer allow me to write up on my scopes and summit up-to-date photos. After their exam, such prompt actions are no more possible.Due to the 'burnout of my xp and vista com' I dont have a personal com to access internet now.Hope you understand.Thanks.--and pls enjoy the photos!

Hi Mr Chia,

Thanks for sharing your work with us. Like those Cak images :)

Yes, I remembered the many sunspots in early Aug 12. The Sun is alot more quiet now. Many of us continue to look out for happenings in 2012/2013.

For those who are interested, here is another http://www.pakalertpress.com/2012/05/07 ... ciousness/report on studies on the correlation on solar activity vs human consciousness.

Hi,Gary
Thanks again for the uploading.
Hi,Acc--yes,the sun's ray is very strong in Singapore and in fact, during the taking of those pic, sweat continuously drip from my forehead. Its quite a challenge to keep the sweat away from the ep and attached camera.Normally I need a bath and change of clothing after a good clearsky session!
Hi,Alfred---Here are the photos of the swarm of ants type of sunspots. This sunspot--1589--continuously change shape during its journey across the sun and its interesting to watch in ALL 3 wavelengths. In 540nm,the swarm continuously change shape and ultimately become 2 small dots before going to the other part of the sun.In Ha, these dots was fringed by a large filament and exhibit a accompanying bright region. In Cak,it possess the swarm of ants look in a large bright region telling us the region involved in fueling its activities. Its really worth the sweat.
Here for the rest of the photos---
The 14 oct 2012,Cak photo shows a flare--in Cak-- in action.By the way about 3 days later, besides a good aurora display at the poles,a non news creating earthquake occurred at lake Taupo--an unpopulated region in New Zealand.
The 2 photos taken on 28 sept 2012 indicates the difference between Cak view and Ha view.In Ha ,you cant see the bright "tail" that is following the sunspot at the top of the pic. This tail never decay and its visible throughout the journey of the sunspot across the sun.By the way, that band 'coincides' with the occurrence of a 180 km/hr wind typhoon that sweep across Japan.

Next,Around 26 oct 2012,band activities--visible in Cak-- suddenly picks up and as indicated in the 3 photos,it continuously increases till 30 oct 2012.Now its gone.So as you can see--the sunspot visible in white light and in Ha may be small, but Cak can review those other activities.Again this coincides with the birth of superstorm Sandy and well, the rest is history in the US.
Yes,in a way I certainly agree with that article on solar activities on humans. However,my view is that
1)Solar activities, through the particles released during its activities, affect the distribution of rain in various parts of the world. It seems that those particles can also affect the movement of the air too,and hence results in irregular weather pattern.
2)Those particles also cause changes in our magnetic field and so I personally suspect cause those places with already unstable plates to quake--hence the more likely occurrence of earthquake.
With such disasters, people grew unstatisfied and government leader review their weakpoints and hence unsatisfied people revote and tupple government. Also floods and weather changes results in lack of food and more social unrests results. Thus, its not surprising that there is a correlation between human behaviour and solar activities.----and thats makes solar observing more interesting!!

Hi Mr Chia,

I was in Penang a couple of days and came back today. Thanks for the pictures on 1589 in 540nm. I read elsewhere that the swarm of ants had about 20+ of them. Great to see them changed over the few days that you imaged them. I didn't see Cak pictures of 1589.

Regarding the long bright tail below the Sunspot, I think it was Sunspot 1575 (in my image it appeared in the bottom of the picture). I also happened to imaged that on 28 Sep 12. It didn't appear so prominently in HA. I have actually missed it if you didn't point it out.

Image

Regarding the solar activities on 26 to 30 Oct 12, I also saw some interesting stuff on those days.

These were around before Sandy. The Sunspot near the middle is 1598
Image

Close-up shot of huge sunspot 1598 - it had M-Class flares but I didn't catch it flaring.
Image

A huge prominence with an interesting shape - an animal shape?
