Event is on tonight. Leaving my house soon. If the sky does not co-operate later, you can still come and chat astro with us face-to-face where we can explain things better and clearer with a telescope there for you learn some of these concepts hands on.

Re: Sidewalk Astro @ Toa Payoh tonight - Wed 8 August 2012
Hi Elton. Thanks for the encouragement and happy belated birthday to you.
We had great session last night. Saturn, Spica, Mars forming an almost perfect triangle in the sky and the crowd was amaze it can still be seen despite the harsh lighting to our immediate left. That patch (and most probably the rest of the sky) was clear all the way from 7:30pm till they set. The Saturn queue was non-stop for hours. Seeing remain good throughout the night with cassini division and a couple of its moons clearly seen.
There is a tentage setup for an upcoming event so we have access to lots of chairs to sit down and observe comfortably. Special thanks to Clifford for coming down to help out with his 72mm refractor and later in the evening, pushing Moon to crazy magnifications with his quality eyepieces. Big thanks to Rlow for dropping by earlier in the evening and poison me with his special barlow+ep combo. That view of Saturn was the best I have seen for last night.
Some of you expected extra long queues because of the DL report before the sidewalk but I did not think so. I told some of you jokingly then that the Toa Payoh crowd reads WanBao and ShinMin papers rather than ST.
So throughout the night, we did not hear anyone of them talk about the DL report. In fact it was the other way round. After they look through in our telescopes, we mention to them about the DL report. It does not bother us in anyway because getting media publicity or not, it was a good evening to do sidewalk anyway -- good sky, good human traffic, eve of public holiday. But no doubt, the DL report did give us an extra morale boost to engage the crowd even more.
Some interesting observations last night:
- A mother had a more dramatic reaction seeing Saturn compared to her children. There is a child in all of us indeed.
- For the first time, someone actually commented Saturn looked big in my 5 inch telescope! I suspect he was comparing the view with the small dot of light in the sky as seen with the naked eyes rather that memory of Saturn in books and magazines.
Lastly, a big shoutout the Bishan group for a job well done conducting another great sidewalk at Bishan Park!
