ETX OTA removal

Post by dew »

hi, anyone have experience in this? i went to check the weasner etx site for advice but after scanning all the articles i couldnt find any describing to me how to take off the OTA from the ETX fork mount.
i've already tried it myself of course but after trying BOTH metric and imperial sized hex keys on the screws on the ETX mount, neither fit. actually this might be a problem from meade cause some of the screws came out but not others which leads me to think that maybe meade used cheap screws with imperfection in the sizes of something..
help!

I remembered removing the ETX hex screws using a flat-tip screw-driver I had which happened to fit nicely. Why not give it a try? :)

My etx90 came with hex keys that fit. Maybe they use a special size?

I have another hex key that does not fit exactly but if I apply a slight sideways force the screw turns. I use it so that I won't screw in too tightly.

The screws that are used to remove the OTA are of a special size and you cannot use the alley key provided. that one is used to remove the focussing knob only. I can't remember what size I used but generally I just purchased the whole bunch (must be imperial size) and one should fit.
what is the purpose of removing the ota?
if you unscrew the 3 retaining screws at the back and remove the focussing knob, the ota minus everything will slide out, albeit with some resistence. from there it would be easier to remove the plastic mounting bracket but be very careful as you may break the catch holding it in place.

once the ota is removed, all you have is a tube, with a bare back comprising the collimation screws (painted so they do not move) and the focussing spindle.

you can try this site :

http://www.atozastro.com/

They used to have a step by step photos on how to remove the ota...but now seems I can't find it anymore
