Solar Images in Nov 2012

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Solar Images in Nov 2012

Post by yltansg »

The Sun has been relatively quiet lately. On 8 Nov 12, about 10:30am it became alive again when Sunspot 1611 entered the Earth-side with a M1.7 flare. I managed to take some shots of the Sun this morning 10 Nov 12 before the clouds set in :) Sunspot 1611, the inner most one of the cluster of sunspots around the 5 O'clock position.

Here is a close-up picture of 1611. It is worth watching as it poses a threat for M-Class solar flare.

M-class flares are medium-sized; they can cause brief radio blackouts that affect Earth's polar regions. Minor radiation storms sometimes follow an M-class flare (Source - www.spaceweather.com).

Thanks Gary for the encouragement.

Caught some more of the Sun on 10 Nov 12 at noon. Here is the zoom-in image of sunspots 1608, 1609 and 1610. There have no solar flare threats from these sunspots. Quite a number of proms in this sector.

On 11 Nov 12, Sunspot 1610 has grown rapidly since yesterday (10 Nov 12) and poses M-Class threat. Did noticed that it was quite active yesterday and that was why I took a zoom-in view of that area. Here is the solar disk on 11 Nov 12 at 8:15 am in between the clouds.

And here is a zoom-in view of Sunspot 1610 on 11 Nov at 9:39 am, It is moving towards the middle of the disk and a coronal mass ejection can have M-class flare effects as mentioned above.
