Test shots thru C9 on badly aligned GEM

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Test shots thru C9 on badly aligned GEM

Post by Mariner »

Having problems with deepskystacker. Trying to stack some shots but keep getting the "Out of memory" message. Really frustrating.

Only able to select best shot and enhance contrast for now...

Prime-focus 1/30 sec shot of Jupiter with 2x barlow

and a 2 sec prime-focus shot of M42 with focal reducer. Aeroplane got inside the shot. LOL

would assume you are using DSS to stack for both images (jupiter and M42)? It will be much better to get the jupiter done on Registax. As for M42 via DSS, try to disable the drizzle settings (2x, 3x, etc). Although DSS is currently a 32-bit application, it may not hurt to ensure that RAM > 4GB. How many M42 subs are you stacking, and image size per file?

Thanks for the suggestions Remus. I have actually tried Registax but somehow it keeps hanging on me and it doesn't align the picts very well. I was trying to stack 5 picts of 10MP shots (Approx 2-3mb each) in DSS. When that failed I tried cutting down all the way to 2 and it still ran out of memory.

another suggestion in DSS is to try lowering the star detection settings. However, if Registax seems to be hanging, maybe it might be better to have a faster computing environment? What machine specs are you using? I used to run registax on an old toshiba laptop, and it behaves in a similar behaviour, after switching to another faster machine, no such problems anymore. Note that stacking software requires lots of mathematical computing power.
