Re: Rare Event: Meteorites injure people and property in Rus
This reminds me of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite fall in 1947, also in Russia (far east) occuring in the mid-morning:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikhote-Alin_meteorite.
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=45losqys ... sM3c&gl=GB.
That one was described as bright as the Sun, and today's one seems to have been too.
I have a walnut-sized piece of that iron meteorite (Sikhote-Alin) which I bought at Kinokuniya (Orchard) last year for under a hundred bucks.
But I don't think today's one is comparable to the 1908 Tungkuska Event (also Russia), though CNN is making that comparison.
Am sure pieces of today's meteorite will soon be on the market.

Oops... this news already posted by Remus in another section:

Perhaps can merge the two threads.

Hi,
I forget to check the coffee corner sub forum, but I think this topic can be in the general astronomy section.
Have a nice day.

Really amazing. Probably the first large meteor strike that has been captured so extensively on video and pictures.
Really scary to imagine also should ever a Tunguska-sized event happen over a populated city....

I think we should be more worried about the fact that it came in undetected.

10 tonnes. Goodness. That's like the weight of 9 cars. If you compress it into a piece of rock, the size would be about 1-3 m in diameter only. Amazing display of kinetic power.
When I saw that smoke trail in those asteroid disaster movies, it looked so unreal but now I realised the real thing is exactly like that!
BTW, I think the Tunguska object was estimated to be about 100m in diameter and that one exploded in mid air causing a massive shock wave that resulted in the devastation known as the Tunguska event.
<update> Apparently, the latest projection placed the meteorite in the range of around 15m in diameter. I guess my guesstimate was way off !
