Thor's Helmet

Hi all,
This was from March trip. Typical winter target, always elusive to get due to weather at our tropical locality. Only managed to get 2 quality subs when the clouds rolled in. The image could have been better with more subs, well till next year then.......

So this is what Thor's Helmet looks like!

I remember you highlighted this object during the March trip. Through the eyepiece of my scope I could barely make out the nebulosity.

The wonders of CCD photography. It has brought the object to life. Excellent image!

PS: This must be one of the greenest nebulae out there. Reminds me of the green Comet Lulin (2009). So I guess it's probably the same element. Carbon?

Hi Gavin, good to have your scope around, actually also my first time to see this object visually. Pretty dim, quite a visual challenge, I can remembered back then that I can barely trace the out line of the object through your 8" scope, and that was because I know where to look after having just imaged it. Btw, if I am not wrong, the green hue of the glowing nebulae is from the Oxygen emission line. Years back, I had imaged it under our light polluted sky, and it showed up very well with narrowband OIII filter.

Kelvin, may i ask, all your shots taken with Newtonian never suffer any contrast, mirror obstruction seems never a problem & result is always rich & balanced color look as good or even better than some of the FSQ shots, is it because Mersing sky is really that super duper or there are some secret technique used ? (can pm me if it is secret ? lol ) in short, will large reflector be as good or better in contrast as APO refractor of smaller aperture or both will converge in a very dark sky - Thanks.
