Images of Saturn at Opposition

Post by yltansg »

Hi,

Saturn is at opposition this week. Here is one taken on 28 Apr 13 just after midnight with so-so skies. Equipment: Celestron 8" Edge HD, X5 barlow, DBK 41AU618.AS. The rings are beautifully lit by the Sun.

Very impressive! Amazing what an 8" SCT is capable of. Your hard work in improving your knowledge and skills in planetary imaging is paying off! Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Nice pic of Saturn. So envy! Wished my photo was like yours. Mine is so small. Must get bigger scope already :P

it is surprisingly bright at this level for 8" imaging with the 5x, Alfred! that's not too bad. Have u tried wavelets processing?

Thanks Shirox, aleetk, Remus and Gary for your encouragement. I am still learning :)

At X5 barlow, I was pleasantly surprised by the bright image. Credit must be given to the DBK 618 camera's sensitivity.

Yes, I used the wavelet processing in Registax. Have been lazy and didn't work hard enough to get better picture.

Have done some more imaging on 30 Apr. Will post pictures later.

Hi Aleetk,

My first Saturn image was about the same as yours. Keep working on it and your image will get better with the shifus' tips :) Of course you also need the right equipment.

Thanks for compliment cataclysm.

Here is Saturn from last night session (30 Apr 13 10:40 pm). C8 Edge HD + X 5 barlow + DBK 41AU618.AS

For those who are interested to know, this is how the stacked picture looked before wavelet processing and photoshop post processing

I use Paul Maxson's tips for Registax post processing (http://www.astronomie.be/registax/previewv6paul.html)

Alfred,

am looking at the saturns with interest. seeing seems to have improved during the moment of capture on the 30th batch as compared to 28th batch.

Have you tried activating more of the slide 1 and 2 small-scale features enhancement? This may bring out the general sharpness of Saturn more, and can "compensate" for slight loss in focusing. I guess you might have done some resampling algorithm to the generic stack bigger? You are getting quite a lot of image scale otherwise for a C8-5X combination. Did miss the opposition imaging opportunity though, otherwise would like to attempt one for a keeper as well, the weather lately had been good especially late in the wee hours.

Nevertheless, glad that you caught some good time with the ringed planet!
