Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Mount

Post by oxygn »

Hi everyone,

i just want to get some advice from those who have experience with different equatorial mounts. I'm looking or an equatorial mount that is able to take the load of a 9 1/4" or smaller scope with a 3" mounted guide scope plus the camera accessories.(not really sure how much that would weigh tho) + the mount can be upgradable to a computerized goto mount, that can be controlled from a comp. + of course the mandatory reputation of it being able to track accurately. any mount that fits that description??

Note: This enquiry does not imply i have any of those equipment. I'm just plannning to get a mount that would service me even when i upgrade my scope in the future.

THanks,
Colin

Hi,
From your requirement, you need at least a Losmandy GM-8.

Have a nice day.

Yes...for a 9.25" + a 3" guidescope.....only one popular mount fits the bill. It's the Losmandy G11.

It's not gonna be cheap. If you add in the Gemini GOTO system...it can set you back to around SGD5K. Not to metnion the weight of this mount is crazy....shipping fees itself will cost you a lot.

I advise you to take away that 3" guidescope and use an off axis guider if possible...that way, you don't need a G11. A G8 should be sufficient. An a LXD55 with a solid mount can be use too. I use a 8" f/5 reflector on the LXD55 and it's super stable....

Not enough for imaging with a 3" guidescope.

Good advice all around. In addition, I would like to add the usual "Try before you buy". The G11 is *big* and you will need help to transport it. You will also need a wedge of sorts to reach the local latitude.

Remus (Starmatrix) is using one for his astrophotos. You can ask him about the mount or even ask if he can show you his setup.

hoho, dreams of astrophotography. i bet the size of the g11 will scare him off. anyway, i dun see much people imaging with a 9.25 sct, at least not dso. better off with a 4-5inch wide field apo. at least those will fit on a gp-dx.
