Its no doubt a very fine instrument but on a practical note I think you'll get a lot more mileage with a large reflector or RC/CDK as far as astrophotography is concerned, cost for cost. For example, a 20" CDK with Ascension 200 mount will cost about 45K-50K USD, not including the observatory, of course incidentally, a large swath of southern US desert has seeing below 0.5" regularly
yup definitely, i got a feeling he built this as a tribute to the old classic refractor observatories or lens makers too
(so... u been to Southern USA desert to stargaze?..wow)

I miss the place where stars shine bright, to gaze upwards in awe of the sight
Its as much Telescope as it is Art
No such luck for me: No time or resources to take a special astronomy holiday in Southern USA, although I've been toying with the idea of setting up a remote observatory. It'll run about 100K SGD for a 17" CDK with Paramount ME and related CCD/Electronics. Expensive for sure but if you think that people spend at least 10K on their setups for lower end equipment and at best image 15-20 nights a year, then 100K for at least 200 fully photometric nights sounds like a deal.
Heh.... now where's that spare 100K I kept stuffed in the old sofa....
"The importance of a telescope is not how big it is, how well made it is.
It is how many people, less fortunate than you, got to look through it."
