EYE OF GOD (NGC 7293) imaging set up - APO Refractor n DSLR

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

EYE OF GOD (NGC 7293) imaging set up - APO Refractor n DSLR

Post by PETER LOO »

I used the following set up to shoot the Helix Nebula (Eye of God) on Saturday 31 Aug 2013 at Bedok South
TS 65, FL =420mm, F6.5
Canon 500D Filter Mod & Heat Sink Mod (self)
Vixen GPD2 Mount
Orion Star Shoot Auto Guider run on PHD Guide
Methods:
Polar aligned with Lagi Simple Method
Data acquisition: Native LiveView shoot by Canon with Long exposure noise reduction function switched "ON"
Weak signal recovery: Combine 2 to 3 shots first before processing it in Nebulosity2, this in my belief , will preserve more detail than individually processing it before combining.
My reason for switching on the Long exposure reduction function: color conversion is nicer than to work from RAW & then calibrate it in s/w like Nebulosity, Maxim DL etc (in my own belief and preference - no need to argue or follow)
Data Info:
13 selected sub-exposures: ISO 800 Max time = 130s, Avg time = 92s, average sensor Temp = 37.6 Deg C.
Shooting evironment:
Got street lamp and HDB lights around this open football field. Cumulus cloud keep on floating in, that's why 4 hours only take few sub
while Gaussian noise is largely minimized via the heat sink attached (bought from Sim Lim Tower), external light pollution can't be help.
