Tekong Skies

Hey all, I'm enjoying my book out now and just wanna share, Pulau Tekong has the most ideal sky for stargazing. It's so clear, no clouds, doing 5BX every morning was something to look forward to lately since Saturn and Jupiter are so prominent. It was also my first time seeing Orion and it's so amazing to see 3 stars lined up straightly in the sky. Heh. It's a wow factor to a beginner like me though pros like most of u might think these are just peanuts.

Hmmm? Tekong not cloudy meh? U can also catch venus in the morning Tarus,canis major..... etc. Wait till u see the star filled sky during field camp. So, u end ur 2 week confinement? How is training wat coy? :idea: 8)

perhaps you had but did not realise it. Most of them appear as a white dot in the sky visually. Now that you are clearer on where the objects are, then perhaps you will pay more attention to them...

Perhaps but the only bright white dot in the sky that do know how to identify is Venus. Which brings me to my next question. How do you guys tell what planet is what planet in the sky anyway without yr scope? And i mean this with reference to all the planets that you can see from Earth, from Mercury to Pluto.

Hi,
I missed going to Tekong for hiking and camping during late 70' and early 80'.During then it was accessable by public.We usually hiked around the island and ended camping at Pasir Tengah (not so sure the name after all these years).It was the eastern end of the island before they reclaim further to the sea.There was a old gun battery station with ramp for landing craft unloading hardwares.It faced toward south east parts of Johore in the direction of Desaru.
The nite sky was superb and milky way was visual to nake eyes in clear sky.
I real;y missed those good old days.
Hope someday I can go back there again to give back good times we spent there.

OK. In Singapore, you should be able to see Mercury (appear very low in west horizon in evening or very low on east horizon in early morning. Anyway, I haven't see it myself... ), Venus (brightest golden "star"... appear on west sky in evening or on east sky in early morning), Mars (red), Saturn (white) and Jupiter (very bright golden "star") without telescope. Forget about Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

You can find out the position of planets from a lots of website such as Sky & telescope, from Astro books or from software, such as AstroPlanner.

By the way, planets usually do not blink, unless the weather is super bad.

Yes i and my platoon buddy yingtian could see the milky way as we were slogging on the route march in the night last year during BMT. It wasn't barely visible, it was very obvious. Not as good as Mersing but enough to make us go ga-ga over the whole journey. It makes a great place for wild life and astronomy enthusiasts....a pity the island is closed to civilians

Just to clarify:
You mean that all the above planets you mentioned (Mars, Saturn, Venus and Jupiter) are on the west end of Singapore in the evening and in the east in the early mornings?

No it is just a referrence to the sky condition as to tis month.
