Funny Cloud Formation

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

From what I can gather, the phenomenon captured above is highly likely a Solar Corona. Coronae have an intensely bright central aureole which is almost white and fringed with yellows and reds. Sometimes that is all to be seen but the better coronas have one or more successively fainter and gently coloured soft rings surrounding the aureole.

Coronae are produced by the diffraction of light by tiny cloud droplets or sometimes small ice crystals. [More]

I can't really tell from the photo, (Sorry, too poor a quailty), but it looks like a lens cloud. I read in some aliens and spacecraft books mentioning that a lot of ppl mistook them as UFOs. I seen my fair share of lens cloud formation in singapore and this sure looks like one of them.

The detail in the cloud is blown out, do you have another pic?

Anyway, I second sending it to APOD! It really looks spectacular. I wish I could have seen it.

Yah I do agree it looks like a huge UFO. So cannot blame those guys who saw wrongly or try and fabricate UFOs huh.

Oh, it was spectacular all right. It is not everyday that I will stop the car by the side to snap a pic with my mobile phone. The actual object was rather bright and devoid of detail in the beginning. What you see in the pic is quite a good representation of what I saw.

Laputa is a fictional place from the book Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift.
