think will give the lens a miss. The astrophotography capability of the lens is not that good too.

See some reference test shots:

http://www.pbase.com/terrylovejoy/70_200

All taken at F2.8. Perhaps it is superb for terrestrial photography, but imaging stars (which are point sources) derives much greater demand on lens performance (center to edge). One can consider stopping down, to improve the lense performance, but the initial basic premise of thought put into this lens is that it would perform well, wide opened, and have high photon-injection rate at f2.8.

sigh!

Hi,
I thought you only want to use it for terrestrial photography.

Anyway, after I saw the Canon Astrophotography website, I realised that zoom lens will not be as good as I thought for Astrophotography at wide open even using the Canon L lens.

The Canon Astrophotography website show various images taken with Canon DSLR and some with their L prime lens. They also show the the sharpness of the edge improve as they stop down the Canon EF24 mm f/1.4L USM lens and recommend to take some test shot to check and stop down if necessary... they recommend to stop down 2 stop (from f1.4 to f2.8) for the Canon EF24 mm f/1.4L USM lens... they are really honest... ha ha ha    So if stop down may be require for the L prime lens, I think you need to stop down further if using the zoom lens.

By the way, I think their L prime lens are quite good for Astrophtography and the Astrophotograph taken with it in the Canon website are very beautiful even at wide open... too bad they remove the Astrophotography section from their new EOS website. Lucky, I "backup" it long ago... hee hee

Have a nice day.

Remus , have you tried the 300 F4L version ?
It doesn't have as much distortions as the 70-200 versions.
