weixing wrote:Hi,
You got the moon phase name wrong... :P It should be:
1. 4-5 Dec 2004 (1/2 waning moon)
2. 11-12 Dec 2004 (no moon)
3. 17-18 Dec 2004 (1/2 waxing moon)

Anyway, I think 17-18 Dec 2004 is a good date... If the weather is good, we still can see some DSO under a 1/2 waxing moon. But if the weather is not that good (**touch wood**), at least we still can show case the moon.

Have a nice day.

Thanks Weixing for the correction.
Yes, I personally prefer at least some Moon view compared with planets or DSO which might not look impressive to the 1st timer.

Proposed Locations:-
1. Singapore Polytechnic ..... SP MRT
2. Republic Polytechnic ...... Red Hill MRT
3. NUS .............................. SP MRT ?
4. NTU .............................. Boon Lay MRT ?
5. Ngee Ann Polytechnic .... Clementi MRT ?
6. ... other places beside the institutions ...
CC, Changi Airport, Esplanade, Takashimaya, etc...

Proposed Dates:-
1. 4-5 Dec 2004 (1/2 waning moon)
2. 11-12 Dec 2004 (no moon)
3. 17-18 Dec 2004 (1/2 waxing moon)
4. .....

Frankly, I am not too keen for Taka 'cos:
1. Crowd difficult to control, same goes for your equipment.
2. Not so easy to have an area for talks.
3. As discussed before, dunno if police permit is needed

actually i wouldn't be too against having ob in taka area, samuel has done public ob at toa payoh central with great success, y should we face much problem.

main idea would be doing everything systematically, 2-3 person to man each scope, with prolly only 2 sets of eyepieces, no other loose equipment around. carrying cases, bags, unused equipment we will prolly need a safe place to keep.

would be nice to have public ob on the 1st day to attract people, maybe 2nd day can have it in one of the campus, with talks, etc.

police permit, permission from related authorities shouldn't be too much of problem. we have abt 4 months to go, just have to figure out where we can get permission from.

but then again, just ignore what i have said, i'm a little over optimistic here.

To put more things into place, why don't we meet up to discuss about the topic?

And

I've ask the current committee in SPASTRO, and they are very happy to be involved in this as well. 1 call and we'll all be down! :D

Sam

wow...talk about FULL support...better than SAF mobilisation!
anyway, to answer a few questions..I recommend that we be not too ambitious unless more astro groups commit their support like in Mars Watch.
Having it at 5 locations will only strain our limited resources. Instead, let's do it at one location. Need not be dark as we will mostly be showing the brighter objects like Jupiter, etc.
Trying to show a newbie M8 would be a no-no as only a trained eye would be able to appreciate its nebulosity. Otherwise it would appear as a small cluster of stars...
and yes....1 or 2 coord meeting should be needed to get things going, I suppose.
