Hi folks,
On Oct.24 (Mon) at around 10:30pm Io and Ganymede and their shadows will be transiting Jupiter. GRS will be visible as well! Simulation for 10:30pm shown below in attachment. It will be a great sight, let's pray for clear skies!

Hahaha. Was about to post about this 1 second ago when I saw this! Clear skies!
Truly rare event indeed. Did a quick check and did not see such an event happening from tomorrow until end of 2012.

Just came back from watching the transit. Weather was quite clear and steady at around 11pm. The view was AWESOME through the 10 inch Newtonian we used.
Ganymede appeared as a big and mottled disc against Jupiter's surface! And the two shadows were obviously different in size. Lots of turbulence structures near the GRS as well! What a great night!

Not good at Toa Payoh. Jupiter was very dim through the haze. Like Kaomoo, didn't deploy.jiahao1986 wrote:Thanks man. How was the weather at your location?Gary wrote:Congrats on a successful observation!!

Tell us more detail about your ob!
- where?
- which 10 inch newt?
- what eyepiece/barlow used?
- how much magnification can it take until the image breakdown?

Re: Jupiter double moon + shadow transit + GRS on Oct. 24!
i was up around 2-4am (Jupiter was just past zenith at 2am) but was futzing/fighting my CGEM.
didn't bother to break out the C9.25 (since only the CGEM can carry it) and besides, like Gary said, the transit was long over.

Anyway, had to finish up some work.

I did the ob at NTU. Looks like the clouds were drifting from west to east, spoiled the sky for you guys and left us with clear sky in the west...
The scope we used is NTU Astro Clubs's 10 inch Orion SkyQuest XT Dobsonian. Eyepiece used was a fake made-in-china 4.5mm TMB, giving an magnification of around 300x. The image was still sharp at this magnifications. We later pushed to 500x with a fake 2.5mm TMB, and the image broke down a lot.
Clear skies please...
