Mars Opposition 2012 @ Toa Payoh Central - 2/3 March 2012

Post by Gary »

Update 3/3/2012, 1800hr: Tonight's saturday session is cancelled due to bad weather. :)

I will be still be monitoring the weather for the rest of the evening. If it is clear, I will deploy my telescope at the same venue and update this thread and my twitter accordingly.

In any case, next weekend is another good period to conduct events as it is the start of 1-week school holidays. You guys have a great week in the meantime!

*************************

Hi Friends,

We will be conducting a Mars Opposition observation session at Toa Payoh Central at the open area outside Toa Payoh Public Library this coming Friday and Saturday.

You are cordially invited to this event with or without scope!

Since I am conducting it on both days, you are free to come for either one or both. If you are interested to attend, please reply to this thread or PM me your day of preference.

Date: Friday 02/03/12 and Saturday 03/03/2012
Time: 7:00 PM - 10:30 PM
Venue: Open area outside Toa Payoh Public Library [Google Map] [Street View]

- We will start observing Moon from 7:00pm onwards and then followed by Jupiter and Venus. Spread the word about the Mars event at the same time so the public can have the option to have dinner and come back again. Also giving them more time to spread the word among their family and friends while waiting for Mars to be visible.

- As the night gets darker, observe bright star clusters like Seven Sister (Pleiades) and Hyades and bright deep-sky objects like Orion Nebula

- Mars should be visible from 8:00 pm and will be the main focus for the rest of the night.

- Saturn should be visible from 11:00 pm onwards. Those who wish to stay late can observe it too.

LOL. Can't time travel to those two nights to declare them to be clear in advance and one person does not make a network. :)

Since I should be free to do sidewalk for those 2 days, it does not take me too much extra effort or planning to disguise it as an event. LOL. :)

Seeya on friday!

If no one minds me bringing my tiny scope, I'll bring it on Friday evening. I want to get a look at Mars anyway. My balcony faces the west so I've been missing out on the eastern sky.

I may pop by on Saturday, towards the later part of the night, if I'm free-ish.

Today's (fri 2/3/12) evening session is cancelled due to bad weather.

If a miracle happens later in the evening, I *may* conduct a session and update this thread accordingly. :)

Have fun enjoying your non-astro activities today!
