Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Hi,
Then I think you should look at Sky-Watcher 80mm - 102mm refractor range or the Sky-Watcher 90mm MCT. You should be able to get it below S$1000.

Check out the Sky-Watcher local vendor website:
Harlequin Astronomics - http://www.harlequinastronomics.com/
McGill - http://www.mcgill.com.sg/

Have a nice day.

Looking at the prices these days, I think a Syntha 5" Mak is quite a good deal for newbies.

Quite maintenance free....easy to carry around, and plenty of aperture for a lot of stuff. Optical-wise also pretty good.

But go learn the sky first la......if you can't identify the brightest stars, don't bother with a scope.

either the 5" mct or a 3" achromat/semi-apo refractor. then get a manfrotto 190/055 tripod + 410 gear head. pick up a nice diagonal, few plossl eyepieces and a bright finder(hint, tak 6x30 is nice, but any generic 8x50 will do nicely).

As you said, "stick to binos first", and that's what I recommend, and use it to learn more about the sky as VinSnr says. Join our obs, I never knew we could see so much just with binos until I joined this group and their obs.

if you want lightweight, Wee Kiong is selling 1 or 2 pieces of Meade 60mm refractor for $100. Quality, of course, reflects the price but at least they are not toys-r-us scopes! They use the more rare .96" eyepieces...
probably a good try-it-out scope at a low price.
ps...standby for CC to reply to this as he is an anti-cheap-refractor person :-)
(his TV 85 cost a bomb)

The best is to get the telescope from china from one of those small shops selling electronics and stuffs. Quality wise might not be that good but price is very low if you know how to bargain well.

i think the best scope is one that u really like n not wad others think is good for u. maybe u shud go ob with ppl more often, see thru their scope n get a general idea wad u like. dun be too swayed by other's opinions though it is good as reference. try not to get into aperture fever unless n have the bucks n the car. all scopes has its pros n cons so it is eventually how much more of each u can take.
