Question on dovetails, plates and saddles

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Question on dovetails, plates and saddles

Post by Mariner »

Pretty new to all these hardware so here goes. I've read somewhere that losmandy plate can be mounted on the CGEM saddle, although its not a full fit as the CGEM saddle is deeper. Question is, can the CGEM dovetail fit into a Losmandy saddle?

The mount I got came with both vixen and losmandy saddles but the scope I purchased (still on the way) comes with the CGEM dovetail. Can it be mounted on the plate or do I have to buy the losmandy plate instead?

Yes. My C9.25 has a CGEM saddle but it fits quite nicely on my AP DOVELM2 which is a Losmandy-style saddle (albeit made by AP).

The CGEM plate is a bit deeper so it sits a bit high on the DOVELM2 but that does not compromise stability in any way.

I also have a dovetail plate for a CGE Pro (that I use with my refractor) - I'm using Losmandy plates exclusively now - and it works just fine in the DOVELM2.

I must add that the ADM saddle for the CGEM is a nicer piece of gear than the AP saddle. Nicer, gold-anodized rosette knobs and it is a dual saddle (Vixen and Losmandy).

Great to hear that. Although I am tempted by the ADM dual saddle but my wallet is already at critical levels from all the haemorrhaging. [smilie=bleeding.gif]

So what mount did you decide on?

There was a non GoTo G11 on the mart yesterday. I am kicking myself for buying the old AP, because it is non GoTo as well. And the G11 with a new Ovision worm would still cost less than the AP, have better periodic error (those Ovision worms are a marvel - easily AP900 class periodic error) and carry much more payload.
