Solar maximum 2013 (Share photos of the sun here)

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Solar maximum 2013 (Share photos of the sun here)

Post by Davegn »

Solar maximum is a normal period of greatest solar activity in the 11 year solar cycle of the Sun. During solar maximum, large numbers of sunspots appear.

At solar maximum, the Sun's magnetic field lines are the most distorted due to the magnetic field on the solar equator rotating at a slightly faster pace than at the solar poles. The solar cycle takes an average of about 11 years to go from one solar maximum to the next, with an observed variation in duration of 9 to 14 years for any given solar cycle.

Predictions of a future maximum's timing and strength are very difficult. Forecasters say Solar Max is due in 3rd Q of 2013.

So let all start sharing the photos of our nearest Star!

I will start off with my first photo of the Sun taken on 7/1/2012.
Photo was taken with an Iphone 5.
afocal projection using a 80mm F5 with a thousand oaks type 2 glass filters.

Hi.Davegn
Do agree with you.It will occur in the present--6th minicycle, lasting 8 mths--with activities going real down towards the last 2 months of this cycle--and perhaps in the next minicycle which may start sept 2013 and last again 8? months. Now is the starting of this 6th minicycle (suddenly sun peppered with spots and as soon as that occurs,a conciding 7.7 quake in alaska).Expect a very photogenic and active sun upcoming.Ready to observe with my 10 plus 'self modified' scopes.

Hi Davegn - Thanks for starting this. Hope it will attract many posting.

I agree with Mr Chia that a very photogenic and active Sun is here.

The picture that I have attached was taken on 7 Jan 13. It covered the Northern and Eastern portions of the Sun. You can do a matching with the Sun provided by spaceweather.com 7 Jan 13. Enjoy!!

Hi,

thanks He An for sharing the photo.

Here is my take of the sun on the 21/1/2013.

Image

The sun look pretty quiet now.
AR1658 and AR1660 both visible in the photo taken via using a white light filter .

AR 1654 is near the edge of the sun from our point of view.
i guessing the proms would be looking really good now.

too bad i am still waiting my order of the HA scope to arrive. [smilie=bad-atmosphere.gif]

Do share if anybody managed to it a photo of it!
