Problem when imaging the Sun

CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Problem when imaging the Sun

Post by aleetk »

Hi all,

Recently I've been doing more solar imaging as the skies during the day seem better than that in the night. When I take the photos of the sun, they all appear red in color when I preview them both in the camera and on my computer. However, after I process them in photoshop, more than 90% of the photos appear to have this big fan shape patch on the sun. Is that patch the coronal hole in the sun? :P It looks like it's missing part of the chromosphere and showing the photosphere. Anyone has any clues why is it like that?

Hi aleetk,

In situation like this, the picture would usually have a bright area. Try adjusting the tilt mechanism until you get a sharp and uniformly bright picture. Use the brightness/aperture and gamma setting to get the brightest (without seeing glow effect) and sharpest picture.

Drop me a pm so I can find out more about your setup and be specific in my reply.

Hi,aleetk
You are using ccd right.;then Alfred is the expert.;but one thing for sure, definitely not a coronal hole.
It looks more like a overexpose region.
