Hi all,
Just out of curiosity:
Is anyone keen on an Australian Outback stargazing expedition (probably next year)? We could use Quantas, fares have gone down recently, and the skies there are nothing less than superb. Will certainly not mind going back to the fabled Flinders Range, or perhaps the highly recommended Alice Springs - Uluru area.

You really know how to tempt people. How about more details e.g. General weather in day and at night, costs, etc. How many days is the proposed program? I hope it would not be too cold at night.

Yup, it's damn bloody cold at night! Most nights below zero. Day reaches about 40+... and that's during WINTER. Went in July 2002. Absolutely brilliant. Fares to Australia have gone down, but getting to the Outback can be costly. Cheapest way (but the most dangerous) is to self-drive. Really dun recommend that.
My two hour exposure of the Celestial South Pole taken near Uluru (Ayers Rock). Made my entire trip worth it.

Hey Remus...I heard so much about Australian skies being WAY better than Mersing skies and really curious to see how great it is.
Unfortunately, I can't take cold weather and probably have no chance to make an obs trip until my kids are older...perhaps in 8-10 years time...!
Have fun in your trip.
btw, anyone remember whether out in the south china sea, is the sky as clear as in australia? i remember way back I was awed by the sky full of stars and the milky way but can't place a reference point in my memory on how good it is...

Airconvent: yes, VERY VERY cold. Was there in woomera (desert area) in May for overseas training. It gets so cold that you wouldn't want to even move (at night). But the skies conditions there is very good (I can see the milky way even before the sun sets, yeah no kidding).
If I would rate I would give aust 10, mersing 7-8, singapore 2-3 (on god nites, haha)
