Re: looking for telescope.

Hi Lim,

I'm a beginner myself, and is still in the process of sourcing equipment (telescope, mount, eyepiece) to start visual observing. So my advise might not be the best, just sharing what i found out over the last few weeks.

You did not mention what you will like to "see" with the telescope, whether it will be moon, planets or deep sky objects. Depending on your expectation, the type of telescope suitable for your purpose might defer. The portability (weight) and ease of use can significantly affect your purchasing plan.

If this is your first telescope, it may be a good idea to first participate in a sidewalk (star party) event by Gary or MystiQ before making any purchase, check out their thread or facebook/twitter page. In doing so, you will likely get a better idea of what is suitable for you after looking at what are the options out there, the size and capabilities. I had attend one of Gary's sidewalk last month, and find it definitely beneficial.

$100 is on low side for a good telescope, there are some good 2nd deal now and then on the Buy and Sell section, but most are above your budget. Once again, the most common advise here is to hold of any purchasing until you join a sidewalk star party to get a feel.

Lastly, welcome to the forum.

I'm sure other more experience members in this forum will be able to give you much better advise.

Hi YJLim. Welcome to the forum. What do you expect to see through a $100 telescope? If your expectation is low enough, it may be possible. Have you attended any stargazing sessions so far?

Hi Lim!

Welcome! I will definitely have to agree with Chianboon on going to a star party to have a look at the various scopes before you decide on which to get. It is also important to figure out what are the things you want to look at in the night sky. For $100, I may personally recommend a good pair of binoculars rather than a telescope. Don't be swayed by the stunning image of the stars an planets you see online! I currently own a pair of Celestron sky master 15x70 which I took a gamble with an bought online. I received it new in excellent condition and with it, I am able to see Jupiter with its four moons, recently omega centauri and of course, really impressive views of the moon! On top of it, it's really portable and comes with a carrying bag (albeit lower quality) which I can bring around and use it for terrestrial viewing. Just make sure you have a strong arm as the binos may be a little heavy, a camera tripod should suffice.

Keep a lookout in this buy/sell section of the forum as you may find really good deals!

Happy hunting!

another setup to consider, go amazon.co.uk
search travelscope 70
click the gbp 49.96 set
go through account setup and CC payment option , select pay in GBP not singapore dollars
deduct VAT and add shipping cost will be GBP 72.99 or SGD 158.30

20mm more aperture than powerseeker 50 for $50 more
1.25" inch focuser and eyepieces

Moon filter is not needed, if too bright you can put a piece of cardboard over the front of your telescope , measure the required size to make a cover and trim it, cut a small hole to reduce the amount of light passing through, slowly increase in size until you feel is the right brightness.
