Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Finderscope - need opinion

Post by Debash »

Hi all:

I'm looking for a good quality right angle-correct image finderscope. I was considering:
a) Antares 8x50 right angle correct image (7* FOV), but one of the sellers on Astromart mentioned that this one has "plastic eyepiece, dim and has crosshair which looks like fishing line and the cross they formed was not in the centre of FOV". So have opted this one out.
b) University Optics 8x50 RA Amici finder is more expensive (new US$ 180), with a smaller FOV of 4 degrees.

Would like to have your opinion on the ones you have used, which gives wide FOV, good quality at reasonable price (at least on the used items market).

Thanks

I have this exact same finderscope. Mine forms a cross in the centre and the eyepiece is a Kellner and the optics is made of glass. The eyepiece also has a dioptre adjustment.

You can come by my place to take a look if you want to.

You may consider an Orion 9x50 RACI finder. It gives about a FOV of 5 deg. It costs about $80 including a bracket. BTW, you need a reflex sight (telrad, rigel, or red dot finder) to use with the RACI finder.

Hi,
a) Antares 8x50 right angle correct image (7* FOV), but one of the sellers on Astromart mentioned that this one has "plastic eyepiece, dim and has crosshair which looks like fishing line and the cross they formed was not in the centre of FOV". So have opted this one out.
I personally like this finder scope very much. Yes, the cross hair is very thick, it is thick so that you can see it clearly. Look at Takahashi finder scope, it got very good optics and very fine cross hair... so fine that you can't see the cross hair in a dark site. Also, as long as the cross hair is somewhere near the centre of the finder scope FOV is good enough.... Remember, you are aligning the centre of your scope FOV to the intersection of the finder scope cross hair, not the centre of finder scope FOV. :)

Anyway, you can compare my finder scope (thick cross hair) with Clement Takahashi finder scope (very fine cross hair) to see which type of cross hair do you like??
b) University Optics 8x50 RA Amici finder is more expensive (new US$ 180), with a smaller FOV of 4 degrees.
I think this finder scope FOV is too small. A finder with larger FOV will be more useful.

Have a nice day.
