Thoughts on Singastro observation sessions

Post by Airconvent »

When I was introduced to Singastro by Wee Kiong (thanks!), the groups met regularly along the shores of Marina South and it was such fun having the whole gin gang at once place where people can interact.

Besides Remus and the Poly gang, there was Charlie and his Ngee Ann group, chee chien, kay heem, ronald go, gavin, samuel ng, chung hooi, rinus, mr au, gary goh, jeremy shears, wira, shaun tay, etc. everyone was so hard core then.
I still remember helpful remus pointing my ETX90 at the Swan and both gary and myself simply could not make it out at all. of course now our eyes are better trained to look out for the nebulosity. Then there was eunos where remus showed me my very first view of a breathtaking Jupiter at x300 on his ex-Takahashi FC60....wow!

Today, many of these group has disappeared and moved on to other activities....I am beginning to see some truly hard core ones waning, too.
The relatively new members just popped in for a while before disppearing.
Singastro currently seems to have too many "comets" and not enough "mercuries"

about the only one still going strong is our current generation moderator, Weixing. He is so hard working that he is an inspiration to singastro.
Maybe we can all vote him as the most hardworking singastroian?!! :D

The poor sky contributed to the slowing down but I can't help but think that it was also contributed by the fragmentation of observing sites. Too many sites chasing too few people means the festival mood is no longer there.
how many of you remember marina south? it was far, yes, but people still lug the equipment by bus or mrt and converge there cos that's where the action is. ..

Samuel tells me the place is now a super brightly park...sigh...

Singastro 2004 gives a chance for everyone to rekindle their interest and to bring back the "Marina South Roar". Hope to be able to see the old timers like Gavin, Rinus, Kay Heem as well as the previous regulars like Charlie and shauntay mix with the next generation singastroians like wei xing, sam lee, arief ....will that happen?

Come on and let's join in !!

Don't think can have the marina south roar anymore as it is now brightly lighted with more developments to that area to be done soon.... kind of miss those days where some public even stop by to see what we are looking at.

I think one reason is because a lot of them keep their observation sessions to themselves. Besides weixing declaring here, many had their own private meetings.

In fact I already seen some "gangs" forming here. Normally these gangs are their own friends or people staying around the same area.

I think telling them to break up their gang and observe as a group is futile. But we can do stuff like Singastro festival to bring everyone together.

For Marina South...you can forget that place now. It's very brightly lited. Not even suitable for hanky panky activities not to mention astronomy.

Hi palz! Im safe to say that im back under stars once more! So soon, that im going to island-hop the Riau Islands later today till probably Sunday with my 80mm binos! Wish me luck! (envy? HAH!)

Since i've pass out from the Police Academy yesterday, i'll be the law-enforcer of Singapore Citizens, protector of Telescopes, big and small, but that doesnt mean i'll be doing patrols at night thou, luck is on my side and got ended up with a 8 - 5 job, so u will see me doing star patrols more often then!

Regarding the SF2004, i'll try to make it with ALL MY EQUIPMENT, no promises though, i may even be deployed to do crowd control duty on the event itself!

Till then, clear skies over Riau....& SG of coz.

hi charlie,
congrats on you passing out, man. you should volunteer to patrol dempsey area, so can drop by to observe while on patrol!! also we will be "protected" while observing :-)

glad to see your "heavenly torpedo" will be operationalised again. As Remus needs some numbers to gauge support, do let him know if you and your "disciples" will be there to exhibit or help.

i dun think observing in gangs is that exclusive or anything, cos these groups are usually smaller, easier for newbies to join in (not so intimidating lah :D) also a lot of the new members here are students, it's definitely easier for us to observe around the area we live, places like dempsey quite ulu, need to drive and all (well i guess it has to be :D)

ANYWAY, speaking of this, what happened to the northwest gang??

didn't we just had a eunos session a couple of weeks back? there were about 15 people back then, but they were mostly the active people in the astronomy scene. Would have also like to see a newcomers into this forum then (especially if you have stayed in the east). We took turns to see bright DSOs via the epsilon and it was a great experience. Lagoon with dust lanes was clearly visible, and we had an enjoyable time taking in roti prata after the session! as always...as long as the weather is stable and clear, and if i am available, i will try to announce it here when i can afford to hold a session then. clear skies!

Oh yes remus...do try to organise your regular sessions and re-kindle the dormant enthusiasm amongst the "old" guard!
