Mounting for 5 inch MAK
Mounting for 5 inch MAK
I got a question for the pros. Can the EQ mount of the celestron 80mm refractor be used for the 5 inch MAK? How heavy a counterweight be used for a particular scope, any ratio? Is half pier 100% necessary for equator country?

Hi,
IMHO the CG3 is not suitable. The CG4 will have no problem... same as the EQ3-2 mount come with the Sky-Watcher 5" MCT.
Have a nice day.
Depend on which EQ mount... I had seen the celestron 80mm refractor mount on two different mount, the CG3 (EQ-2) and the CG4 (EQ3-2).Can the EQ mount of the celestron 80mm refractor be used for the 5 inch MAK?

As long as the counter-weight can be balance with your scope... no particular ratio. I think a counter-weight of around 4kg should be enough. How heavy a counterweight be used for a particular scope, any ratio?
Depend on your mount actually. If your North marking of your tripod is on a leg, you need the half-pier. If your North marking of your tripod is between the two leg, you don't need a half-pier, but you need a vixen style counter-weight (smaller diameter). Anyway, it is always prefer to have a half-pier... it is easier to do a good polar alignment. Is half pier 100% necessary for equator country?
Have a nice day.

simple, if the eq2 is really suitable, y doesn't the manufacturer sells it with the 5" mak for an even more attractive price.
the eq3-2 takes more load, has wormgears on both axis. the eq2 is likely to have wormgears only on the ra axis, and not the dec axis. this will limit the movement of the dec axis. for a proper scope like the 5" mak, one shouldn't comprise on the mount at all, thus the manufacturer package the 5" mak with the eq3-2 instead of the eq2, which is suitable for cheaper scopes.
putting the wormgears aside, the mak has 1500mm of focal length and can easily take over 250x of magnification. the 80mm refractor barely has 900mm, and not likely to do well over 150x. thus choice of mount here is oso obvious.
one question i would really wan to ask, wat is the price u are going to pay for the eq2, is it really that low for u to actually consider getting one. if so y everyone is asking for the ota and not the mount.
if u ask me, i would forever refer u to the manfrotto 410 + 055/190, almost everyone of us who owns a smaller scope owns a 410 head, dun think u can go wrong with that.
if u are still after the gem mount, get the eq3-2, at least that mount is going to last u a much longer time than the eq2. it's light enough to carry out and it works for the purpose it is designed for.
as for whoever that is selling the eq2 mount, dun hate me for saying this. just helping him out since he doesn't seem to have much luck in his previous deals.
