I was surfing for more info on LXD55 when I come across this site : Jason's Backyard Astro
It mentioned aligning the Polar Finder Scope first by first setting up the mount without the OTA, counter-weight & shaft. This is the same as the finder-scope we attached to our OTA? Is yes, then how to and why align without the OTA?

Hi,
The polar scope is different from a finder scope... different purpose and use differently. It is basically use to help in polar alignment when you can see the polaris. So cannot be use in Singapore and southern hemisphere.
Basically, it is easier to adjust altitude and use the polar scope without the OTA. In Singapore, we just set the altitude to around 1 degree and use the compass to point the mount at North for rough polar aligment. To get an accurate polar alignment, we use the drift star alignment ( http://www.singastro.org/viewtopic.php?t=212 ) ... a very accurate polar alignment method, but very time consuming and need a lot of practise.
Have a nice day.
