Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Perseid's Truss Tube

Post by coolcat »

I hope I don't sound silly. As you know I've got this 8" Newt. I've yet to bring it out because it's kind of large for me to handle alone.

I'm wondering whether it makes sense to buy the Perseid's portable truss tube setup minus the mirrors, and transfer my mirror over. (the one that was exhibited during Singastro Fest)

Weixing suggested "potong" the Newt in ala-Chris-style.....

please don't potong the tube :(
a complete "airline carry-on" perseid's truss structure for 8" f/5 should cost you less than S$300

cheers,

Not really possible. Their structure is built for f/6 and your mirror is a f/5.

Even if they were to build a dob for you at f/5, it will be quite short. Imagine putting your dob now quite close to the ground....

It need not be near the ground. You can place your ground board on a three-legged stool which would elevate it by about 30-60cm. Sam (Harlequin) should know which stool I am talking about. I think he got one after I told him about it.

Yes, it is neat. However, I disclaim any credit for the idea. I copied it shamelessly from an article in S&T some years ago. :-P

Once you like the concept, you can replace it with good mirrors and it will make a good portable setup.

Only problem is that once the aperture or length goes up, the C-channels are not strong enough and other materials or thicker channels need to be used.

Coolcat, see what Arief can come up with for the 10" dob and you can modify it for your 8" OTA. Do not cut the tube per se. You can use PVC pipes. A 10" I.D. diameter tube should be suitable for you. There is a place that sells the PVC tubes in large diameters at Paya Ubi Industrial Park. Sorry, I can't remember the address right now. If you need it, I can try to check it out for you.

Hi,
I don't think they have a website. But CK said that he will post the pictures of their Truss Dob here once their new design is finalize. The one we saw was a prototype.

Have a nice day.

KayHeem, so far their link seems down. On their name card, the website is www.perseid.com.my. But the site doesn't seem to exist...

However, you can email Mr. CK Lim at perseid@streamyx.com to get some pictures

CK Lim was a wonderful guy. I talked with him for quite awhile, and he is willing to bend backwards if you have any special requirement for your order. He is pure astro guy and he knows his stuff. His truss dobs even amazes me for the price. For transport, that whole dob goes into a box....hand luggage style! Of course, the truss tubes you have to carry them separately, but the upper cage goes into the mirror box and the mirror box goes into the rocker box. It then has a lid with a handle to cover the rocker box. Such design would have fetch premium $$ in US.

He can also just sell the structure for a few hundred bucks and you can then slap a premium mirror in. I calculated that a 8" hand luggage style truss tube with a University Optics 1/10wave mirror would cost less than S$1200. Quite a good deal.

By the way, he is selling the 8" f/6 truss with Guan sheng optics for $899. Quite an incredible price.
