Machholz Alert 7/8th of Jan

Post by MooEy »

For those who have not been paying attention, Machholz will reach it's peak during the 7/8th of Jan, which will be next Friday and Saturday at around 4.1mag. For those who are interested in it's location, it will be just beside M45, also known as Pleiades.

Hi,
I don't think the weather will improve these few days... I think the weather will only improve after mid next week.

Anyway, if weather really improve, I'll resume my observation session in Tampines.

Have a nice day.

yes!!! thanks to "help line" weixing who is braving it out at Tampines now (he saw Saturn and 3 of its moons in a row earlier!), I managed to locate the comet tonight on my Bino. Was amazed it had moved so far away since 7-8 Jan. If you can catch it tonight or tomorrow night at midnight, look west at M45. Then move 10 deg down in her 5 o-clock direction and its there.
Quite dim on the bino, so I'm guessing it would be a non event on a scope.
Lots of clouds moving around and my neck ached after 2-3 minutes looking near my zenith.
To pass it forward, I also told David Lian and Chung Hooi in Tuas now hot to find it too....
thanks weixing! :D

Yup, managed to catch the comet tonight too. Very tight nucleus with large diffuse glow but no visible tail.

Enjoy the night everybody!

Chris

HI Chris...good to receive your transmission!
With this being the first decent sky in 6 weeks, I guess everyone here are like drug addicts being given their fix!
I got a lot of calls this evening from many who were excited about the clear skies. Unfortunately for me, its a week day and I'm quite tired, so had to be happy with a glimpse of Machhotz only...heh heh
I think weixing would stand as the one that has maximised tonight to the fullest!

Hi folks:

Thin clouds (12/1) but glad to find many stars visible. Probably the best nite since Xmas!
Comet Q2 looks bright without any visual tail ( shallowed by the thin cloud)... A quickie video image stacks here, did not have time to search for good frames etc. Also tried with the setup with M1.

my goodness, yk, you captured M1 in Singapore!
its amazing it even has enough light to excite your ccd under our conditions.
and yes, the comet looks good...I was using a bino and my neck was craned and aching at almost 90 deg and all I could see was this dim and blurred patch..none of the details that Chris managed to see...heh heh...
