M1 Crab Nebula: Scope Killer in Singapore

Post by weixing »

Hi,
I tried to look for M1 Crab Nebula using the C11 yesterday when M1 was quite high and the sky was quite clear. The result, I can't see anything at all... :( :(

Currently, the scope that "die in the hand of M1 Crab Nebula under Singapore Sky" is: C8, 10" Teleport and C11.

M1 - An object that can be easily seen in Mersing using 4" scope, can't be seen at all using a 11" scope under Singapore sky. Just wondering what does we need to see M1 under Singapore sky?? :k-?: :k-?: :k-?:

Conclusion: Nothing can substitute clear, dark and light pollution free sky.

Have a nice day.

Haha, I totally agree with you indeed. We need more light-polluted free skies here in Singapore :).

I really liked the C11 last night. The XLT coatings were amazing, virtually making the corrector plate disappear!

Weixing, dun discourage people lah :) M1 can still be seen in Singapore. If you remember, we saw M1 at the east coast bicycle track (challanging) and at the changi reclaimed land dark site (obvious). Sky transparency is also important. Any slight haze or thin high clouds will wipe out galaxies and large faint planetaries.

Actually M1 can be easily seen even thru a 80mm scope under dark sky condition. For low contrast objects such as M1, it can be next to impossible to visually see it with any scope if the sky background is washed out with light pollution. P
As Elton mentioned, probably the best chance in Singapore is to head extreme east (Changi) to see it rising or extreme west (Tuas) to catch it in the western sky.

Did we see it in the reclaimed land??? Why I can't seem to remember?? Ah aye... must be getting old and memory start to fail... next time must write a observation log already... found a free hosting website to do a web version... hee hee =P =P

Have a nice day.

I think we sometimes just have to be selective in viewing the appropriate objects under the current sky conditions. For example, I prefer to savor the elusive faint galaxies and diffuse nebulae under the dark skies at Mersing.
