Finally someone got it right

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Finally someone got it right

Finally it is here. The first mass produced truss tubes. I suspect this could have came from GSO or Synta, but it is in the right direction. Someone should fill this market and Meade decided to do it. However, I don't see the need for an 8" truss tube though.....the sonotube version is not too bulky anyway.

And you know what...i don't think it will be long before we see 14" and 16" truss tubes from them as well. Those will be the real custom dob killer!

Wow this is certainly good news. One firm which I think will be in the deepest s&^% will be Discovery Telescopes...

It is a good deal. A lot of temptations before X'mas...
It is interesting to know how portable the 12" dob is. This 12" dob will also affect Orion and GS.

The mirror is thick and stores a lot of heat. Without the fan, the mirror will take a long time to reach thermal equivalent in cold climates.

cheers

I wonder if I drop my zambuto mirror on one of these structures. Does it make it a "semi premium" scope? :-)

Any guess on what kind of woods they will be using?

At that price, I am sure it will be particle-board or similar. But I have no problems with these on my Orion XT10. The 12" is really good news since a conventional 12" dob won't fit into most cars. Too bad I am leaving the US soon else can try one out :)

Nah...too late. I just ordered a 11" f/5 from Astrosky with a Woden Mirror. Almost double the price of that Meade 10" f/5 but of course, the components used in the Astrosky is better (moonlite focuser, Astrosystems dew guard, Antares secondary, Woden certified optics, shroud)

But then I doubt the image at the eyepiece or the viewing experience is twice better...so the Meades are really a good deal.

My concern however, is whether it comes with a shroud and dew heater for secondary. I suspect that one might have to retro fit quite a few things before we can use it well in the field. The cooling fan is not so important for us in Singapore, but the dew heater for secondary and the shroud is a must.

If these goes into 14" or 16" area, then things will really get hot. Discovery will be the first to close shop.
