Sound quality (SQ) is not a strong point of the ipod.

If you want better SQ, then you should try out the offerings from Creative, iRiver or iAudio instead.

i found the ipod quality not bad tho, owned a second hand one for a few weeks then sold off because it requires a backup of music on my computer instead of being able to fully transfer all the music in there.

Oh yea, if i recall correctly, there's an equaliser in the ipod so you can choose different presets, maybe you chose the wrong preset? You can choose one that has more bass to decrease the hollowness.

But, if you are an audiogeek, i guess lots of reviews about the ipod contender, Zen, from Creative, praise them well. With 24hrs playback time it's also a far better deal than the ipod with only 8hrs, although i guess the design could do with some improvements. I'm currently in search of a cheap Zen to verify this too..

A good headphone or earphone will help a lot. If you want the best sound, everything has to be good.. including your ears. :)

Get the zen micro! I have one and love it. Great sound quality and incredible battery life. I left mine on accidentally when I went to bed and it was still going strong when i woke up. :)

For those who wish to find out more between the different players or want to know more about Headfi (music appreciation through earphones/headphones), do pop over http://www.sgheadphones.net/

I prefer headphones to earphones because of comfort and generally better sound insulation.
