Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

Dew Shield

Post by jermng »

Hi,
I just bought a Vixen Dew Shield for my C8 after the recommendations of many many pple ... =)

It seems a little short though ... the shield itself is only 22cm(~8.5") long .. after attaching to the OTA, it'll probably protrude 6-7" from the corrector.

Question is, will this length be effective for dew prevention? It seems pretty short to me. Is there a certain length or diameter:length ratio for a dew shield?

Second thing, I used to think that dew shields all come with velvet insides or at least non reflective surfaces, but this one is as reflective as any other plastic sheet. Is this common? Now I've got to go and buy flocking paper and flock it ... argh ... It's supposed to double as a glare shield ...

I'm quite disappointed with the dew shield. I expected more from a Vixen product .... and I spent $60 on it ... argh ...

Is this normal for dew shields? Am I expecting too much? =)

Cheers!

The Astrozap dew shield comes nicely flocked with black felt. But my older Orion dew shield is also unflocked.

Rule-of-thumb for length of dew shield would be minimum of 1.0x to 1.5x the diameter of scope.
