Webcam Vs DSLR

Post by siahheng »

Hi, seeing all the fantastic pictures put up recently (esp Gavin's, Andrew's, Wei Xing's, etc), I am curious as to which is the 'better' camera for astrophotography - webcam or digital SLR.

In terms of picture quality, which camera would give better results (for planets and for DSOs)

Thank you.

For planets (they're bright) , webcam. For DSO, DSLR.

Err.. not really renting a scope. Rent-a-scope is for Remote Astrophotography. See here.

Hi Andrew, great article. You write really well... :)

For these rent a scope set-up in USA, wouldn't their night time when you do your imaging be our day time when we are working? Thanks.

Sia Heng,

Yes! That's the beauty of it! While those in the US have to wait till 9pm to image, I can do it during lunch time in Singapore! Even those in NY have only a 2-hour advantage. If it is too crowded, just wait till 6pm, when it is 3 am there! I don't have to lose sleep to take the pictures there... :)

Arief - Thanks. Actually this is the second revision. The first revision was too 'violent' and I had to censor it!

mmm.... SBIG ST8XE (in Rent-a-scope) is a $$$ special CCD camera. If put it online, can it be considered as a webcam (web + camera)? :)
