EM-10 or GM8?

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

EM-10 or GM8?

Post by ariefm71 »

Which mount will comfortably handle a 26lbs (<12kg), 1.2m long, perfectly balanced OTA for visual and planetary webcam? EM-10 is rated (conservatively) for 25lbs and GM8 is rated 30lbs (overstated?). Will they give significant benefit compared to my current GPDX?

Really don't want to go the G11 or EQ6 route because of the size. Also, just got a message that GE HK can not sell EQ6 anymore :(

I wouldn't recommend to overload the EM10 mount even though it's rated conservatively since we're using it around the equator area (CW shaft perpendicular to the ground).
Granted I dont own an EM10, but from the EM200 design, the spot where the DEC housing is attached to the RA housing (using 3screws to a brass dovetail shaft where the polar scope is housed), is i.m.o. pretty weak. I think, by pointing to lower altitude, the combined weight + gravity (scope, dec housing, counterweights) would put a lot of stress toward that particular joint.

EM10 is rated for 7kg only. :)

7kg is imaging load, i think. The old EM-1S/EM-2 is stated in the manual can take 25lbs (visual, conservative?), so EM-10 should be about the same. Any owner of GM8 (with G11 saddle plate) here allowing me to test my OTA on your mount?

I have an old GM8.

For visual, I think 26lbs is probably at the upper limit. 30lbs as stated in manual is a little bit too much.

I have tried mounting a Meade 10", and I can feel the mount started to "crumble"....

If you don't want to compromise on a rock-steady quality mount for high-power planetary imaging, you should perhaps consider a minimum standard of at least the EM200 mount or better. You have to factor in that your current ota's length, rigidity and distribution of weight etc is not quite the same as compared with the Mewlon 250 on the EM200. Just my 2 cents.
