I just heard from a very reliable source that the National Park Board is thinking of lighting up mount Faber as a way brightening up the night skyline of Singapore.
With this trend of putting up more light pollution it will be very bad for astronomy in Singapore.
(fyi, my source holds the "keys" to all the lighting and parks in the western part of Singapore)....
actually if yu had been watching the news on TV or reading the papers , you would know it is a government initiative to light up Singapore and make it like Hong Kong at night. I ony hope they had some sense to impose some sort of regulation to ensure the lightings are pointed downwards...

Well, at least for Hong Kong, they still have quite a number of islands, and hills for them to escape from those light pollution from the city area. But for Singapore... If they're going to light up the whole sky... I guess we don't have much place for us to go liao (except for those restricted places like forests controlled by SAF)...
Sad leh...

Go and take a look at the exhibition now on display at 1st storey of The URA Centre, Maxwell Road.
Hope that we can convince Turf City management to let us use their carpark C/D after 11pm. The only place in Singapore to switch off the light at night and the north facing from the carpark is the forest. They have a security at the entrance to the carpark and only allows authorise car to get into the premise. I think it is better than LCK.
It might be easier if SingAstro is a formal registered society... then we can discuss the terms with them on official basis. Perhaps, in return we can organise regular star parties for Turf City. Any volunteers?
As I have always believed, SingAstro has the potential to be a credible and reputable organisation, regardless it being formal or informal.
Years back there was a discussion on this but a decision was made against going registered. Among the considerations are:
-there is already Tasos if you want to join a formal society
-incur admin work
-not enough people willing to commit time and energy to run a registered society
-keep it simple

I agree with CC. I ran a society during my time as an undergraduate and it's a lot of work.
Perhaps we can ask a formal organization, e.g. school astro club to organize it and then invite Singastro to participate?

Think most schools cannot afford regular obs like us. tasos already has sci center as their base.. i think?
I also don't really agree for it to go formal, too much admin. And Singapore admin so many red-tapes.. though i haven't compared it to that from other countries, so i don't know if it's relatively a lot or a little. As for the turf city, i'm all for it. I'll do my part in the regular star parties if there'll be one!!
Stargazing ... is an excuse to stay up past bedtime that never fails!
