How about an equipment fest right at the heart of the town? The idea is not so much of star watching...but more for creating awareness. At least when they see my GOTO mount next time, they wun think I am some terrorist.
On the serious note, it is to let the public know that astronomy is well and alive in Singapore. Not only that, but to also tell them that telescope is not just a straight thru-viewing device, but it also comes in various shapes and forms. By creating awareness, think it's good for singastro and all of us...
What do you all think?

I like the idea! I'd second it if they don't touch the equipment, and if we can find a place to showcase the equipment. Though I don't have any scopes, I wouldn't want itchy-itchy hands to come in on our precious equipment too..
But, since it's a crowded place, do we then have to request for some liscence from the government? That i'm not very sure..

Great idea, but I think orchard road might not be suitable as they will most probably not be able to get to see the full capability of any telescope. I think Marina bay might be a better choice.
BTW, exitibition license is required from local authority, think it is from the police, under Chapter 257, Public Entertainment Act.

guys, marina bay or fort canning hill maybe a good place to starwatch...but you can't get mass public there.
I think we first have to set what we want. Do we want to starwatch, or do we want to just display our equipments? My objective is to create awareness with our equipments. It's not to starwatch. It's not to show them what is M1 or M45 or M31, but rather to show them that we do have an astronomy community in Spore that owns almost all kind of scopes in the world. It is to expose the public that there is such thing as astronomy here and it's not just a telescope in the science centre.
Of course, we can show them simple things like planets or moon that doesn't require a dark sky and fasinating enough for the public.
For this purpose, we should get a place that naturally has a lot of people. They dun have to take a bus or taxi to get there.

Seriously, dark places and large crowds, they don't go together. If you are willing to put an ad in the newspapers, this may make all the difference. Just a small ad in Classifieds will do. Especially if the place is convenient, and if you make sure to emphasize it's FREE, the crowds will come. And an anonymous tip-off to CNA and ST to investigate certain news-worthy incidents wouldn't hurt either. Who knows, you guys might get your 15 sec of fame......
the lamest idea i could come up with is chinatown, i'm sure it will be a "star" event !!
But really, ChaosKnight is right, dark places and large crowds don't mix... not really thou. but tipping of CNA and ST sound right, but crowds may get the news after the whole event is over.
And remember to pull this off in a Saturday night, when crowds are at peak.
