Hi everyone,
Finally, 2 days before the current Monsoon surge on the 08 Jan 2025 (07 Jan 2025 was nearly clear the entire night), there was actually pretty good seeing. Here's 2 photos of Jupiter with my little ETX125 + Vivitar 3x teleconverter (2x measured) + asi224MC:
and a more sinister looking Jupiter:
I think this the best resolution and clarity to be had with my small scope and I'm quite pleased with the results.
On the 07 Jan 2025, I took a photo of Saturn, hoping that I'll see Titan's shadow. But no go because Titan was at the wrong position for it to cast a shadow. The shadow transit of Titan happened a few hours later after Saturn had set. Anyway here's a photo of Saturn with Titan. Titan is a lot dimmer than the moons of Jupiter like Io and Europa. My guess is that Saturn is twice as far away from the Sun as Jupiter and that's the reason for why Titan is so dim:
Finally, I guess, with one data point, that the precursor days to the Monsoon surge presents an opportunity because there was one night (07 Jan) that was nearly cloudless and the next was (08 Jan) was not as good but definitely useable. For the next Monsoon surge, I'll be ready to do DSO's rather than planetary.
And as usual, the Singapore Met office is useless for giving any heads up on cloudless nights.
