Manfrotto 475b tripod with 488rc2 ballhead

Post by wucheeyiun »

This is a very tall and high capacity professional tripod with a high capacity manfrotto ballhead.

Check here:-

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/2 ... lack_.html

Very tall, up to 6 feet tall with 12 kg payload, ballhead max capacity is 8 kg.

Tripod @ $320
ballhead new in box @ $130

Buy both for $420 :)

This tripod and ballhead is great for very large Bino or terrestrial scope which you can stand up vertical to view through bino without slouching.

Ballhead can adjust tension? Can it be use as a alt-azi mount?

Yes ball head can adjust tension, but it is not really a alt-azi mount although it can act like one....it can pan horizontally and the ball quick release plate can be adjusted to be on it side like a astroslew type mount.

But it is not one of those astroslew / microstar mount.

i actually deploy the tripod with my wo102sv and put a chair between the legs to give viewer a sense of size of tripod. If i stand up straight, my eye level will be the same level as eyepiece.

a view of ball head and scope. There is a quick release plate that will allow quick deployment of Bino / Scope .

Rem, bino must have a L bracket to attached onto quick release plate. Most large 20 x 80 bino will have that sliding bracket for balancing.

The 488rc2 have a panning base allowing fine adjustment horizontally. There is no fine adjustment for the ball head.

Bro, with your 102SV on top, can you move the scope around comfortably and when you stop, the scope stays in place?

Also, is the above pictures just for photo purposes are did you really use your scope that way? Because it seems quite incredible for that one single screw on the quick release plate to hold onto your scope so tightly.

I use this setup for birding purpose...and tele-photography at sungei buloh..

btw, the rating for this ballhead is 8kg, and the qr plate does not use small screw, it used a butterfly thumb screw. The scope is only 4.5 kg, and is does hold fast and tight.

The only problem is that the ball head does not have fine adjustment, for astro use, i use the manfrotto 410 instead, and also the manfrotto 410 is also single screw attachment QR plate and also held the scope very well.

You need to see to appreciate how the qr plate integrates at the bottom of the scope.

Hi,
I'm quite interested in this tripod.

Anyway, do you think it can still take the load of around 12kg and remain stable with the center column raise up??

I'm thinking of using this tripod with Astro-Slew II and my 8" F5 Newtonian, but the center column might need to raise up to clear the 8" F5 Newtonian OTA from the tripod leg. I think the total weight will be around 12kg.

Have a nice day.

I think the tripod dampening period is too long for a 12 kg scope, i only manage to achieve 200x max with about 1.5 sec dampening, which is bad.

i would recommend it for a 20 - 25 x large bino, or 400-600mm f4 lens with camera (max) to use comfortably.

i can lend it to you to try out....The capacity is 12 kg, and it is a heavy weight pro tripod.

Noted. Also, I don't think I'll use it at that high magnification.

You mean you can loan me for one or two days to try out??? Quite impossible for me to bring my 8" F5 there to try.. :P :P If yes, when you are free?? :P

Thanks and have a nice day.

I don't need fine adjustment. I just want to know how to use this ball head. Do you mean that I always need to loosen the ball head, move the scope, then tigthen back the ball head before I view?

Or can I just adjust the tension, and then slew the scope anywhere without the need to loosen the ballhead and tighten again?
