Stargazing @ Chinese Garden

Post by Traveler »

Hi everyone,

Some of us are having an observation in conjunction with Earth Hour 2008. Do join us with your scopes and bring your family and friends too!

"Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative which calls on individuals and businesses around the world, to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday March 29 2008 between 8 pm and 9pm. The aim of the campaign is to express that individual action on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better."

"Help stop light pollution by participating in National Dark-Sky Week, March 29 through April 4. National Dark-Sky Week is a great opportunity to dust off the old telescope from the attic and share in the wonder of the universe that has been part of the human tradition for thousands of years."

Play your part. Turn off the lights. And join us for a night under the stars!

the field beside chinese garden is always water logged and soggy..not really advisable for an ob..instead, there are 2 concrete platforms near to the entrance of chinese garden, they might be better choices. btw, the lights there are only turned off at ard 2 am.

Hi Tungkian, you're right that the lights don't turn off very early. Will it still be soggy even when there's no rain?
It's the most convenient place we can think of for now since it's near an MRT station. Any suggestions where might be a better location in the west?

hi traveler! yeap, the field is often water logged and soggy even though there is no rain..i guess that's why it has still remain undeveloped despite being a prime piece of land..haha..which is good...i used to ob there every weekend, but have now become a balcony observer liao...haha

hmm..where...in the west..chinese garden there is very good, but have to be late at night for an overnight session..at the concrete platforms right towards chinese garden side..budden need to bring mosquito coils...there are PLENTY of mosquitoes waiting to suck your blood! haha...serious!

maybe u can ask the security uncle to off jus a small portion of the lights nearer towards the entrance to chinese garden? the area there is very good ard 1/2 am..i've seen the entire orion constellation..entire meaning every star of the constellation! hmm..i've been able to spot mag 4.5 to 5 stars there before...maybe it's person dependent though...

We are competing for head count. There is 1 ob in the east and the other in the west on the same day. Should I start another 1 in the central? I think better not, might join the 1 in the east and org 1 a week later @ Turf City.

i would second tungkian's opinion about mosquitoes issue there. However, we held the massive Mars Watch 2003 over at the grounds next to the Chinese Gdns MRT, and it was fine. Perhaps too many choices for the mosquitoes...
