How is the yellow WO 102ED?

Here is the place to talk about all those equipment(Telescope, Mounts, Eyepieces, etc...) you have. Not sure which scope/eyepiece is best for you? Trash it out here!

How is the yellow WO 102ED?

Post by VinSnr »

Hi guys,

I know ACC as this scope before and now it is owned by another person. Can give some short review on this scope especially on the colour correction and mechanics??

okok..lemme give a review of the scope then...

the colour correction i would say is very good, close to excellent. ok, i admit that i have not looked through pricey APOs before, but the colour correction is almost on par with my 6 inch SCT..unless you're gonna push it to like 300x power, else i don't think the CA will even be remotely visible.

contrast is very high, images are very sharp! several ppl have seen through it and they have also remarked about the sharpness and contrast.

the stock focuser is pretty smooth and good, although it cant bear the weight of a 2 inch diagonal, binoviewer and a pair of hyperions without slipping (i doubt most ppl would actually load so much weight on it..it's close to 2.5kg of additional weight). Hence, i've upgraded it with a feathertouch focuser and it's now slick and smooth! no more slipping problems and superb focusing! haha..

the felt of the sliding dew shield is a bit miserable, i unscrewed the dewshield and realised the felt isnt felt..haha..it's jus some crappy paper stuck around the OTA...gonna refelt it soon..

the tube rings are superb, no problem with them! sturdy and large, and abit on the heavy side..

the entire set up with tube rings, dovetail, 2 inch diagonal, binoviewer and 2 hyperions top the scale at around 6.5 kg, so it's almost the limit of a GP mount..oh well, if u're imaging it'll only be ard 4 kg though...

i guess that's about it..feel free to ask any more questions!

tungkian, how easy was it to remove the original focuser? just unthread from the tube? what FT model compatible with the scope?

thanks!

very easy, just unscrew..haha..although it's a bit tight...gotta use a bit of force before it came out..

just go to astronomics, and check under their astrotech 102ED refractor with feathertouch microtouch focuser upgrade. the focuser assembly is exactly the same (cost me USD125 including shipping by USPS Priority Mail International). comes with rotating collet type focuser just like the stellarvue 102ED's version..but the focuser is not entirely a feathertouch cause i believe the drawtube is still the original rotating collet drawtube..i'm not sure if it was manufactured by starlight..budden it's REALLY smooth..i'm basing this "REALLY smooth" description with the experience from my SCT feathertouch. the feathertouch upgrade gives a firm and smooth feel to the focusing when i add on all the barang barang behind (2.5kg of barang)...

I went to astronomics, and saw the FT turning knobs. I didn't see a FT focuser drawtube. My thinking is that if the FT upgrade is only on the knobs, then how come there is a need to unscrew the whole focuser? Am i missing something?

This is what i saw:

yeah..i think u're right. it's called a feathertouch microtouch focuser upgrade..so it's jus the focusing part, i.e. the thing u call the knobs (actually the crayford assembly).

the drawtube by itself is very smooth, so i guess it's not a problem.

ok, the WO102ED comes with a rotating screw type focuser. budden as you can see from the picture in the previous post, it is the collet type. so when i bought the focuser from astronomics, they sent the entire focuser to me, i.e the drawtube, the collet, and the feathertouch...something lidat..so gotta unthread the entire old focuser to change to the new focuser..something lidat..

I see i see. I think you got a great deal on the upgrade. The crayford assembly already costs a great deal or almost US$125.

last question, i didn't manage to find an item that indicates focuser upgrade for the OTA on the website. Does it mean you had requested your upgrade via email and lots of liasing with the other party? Thanks man!

hahaha..yeah..it was through email..but PLS do not say i told u that..otherwise later they'll think we're trying to leech on them for the feathertouch and rotating collet focuser upgrade...thanks!
