I just got this scope for the same price like yours and I would like to share my "nightmarerish" experiencetungkian wrote:nahh..go buy the 5 inch triplet ed from northgroup. i got a quote from them for the 5inch triplet with box, rings and dovetail for ONLY SGD1500 SHIPPED PLUS GST!

First, I got a call-up from the customs to explain what the scope is for. Let's just say that I don't wish to describe everything because I don't wish to remember it but I was glad to finally got the scope.
Then, there was a big dent on the side of the box. Some PRC idiots must have kicked the side of the box and dented the aluminum case. The scope looks fine, but few screws were missing. That's still a small issue. But when I tested it first light, collimation was totally off. I mean I bought this scope to avoid collimation problem and here I am with a collimation problem. Probably the handling was so bad from China that it took the collimation off.
There isn't any collimation screws and I do not know how to "shim" the focuser. The collimation look bad enough that I don't think shimming will work. I can, of course, try to send this back to China, but there is no gurantee that I wouldn't have to go through this whole ordeal again. Not to mention paying for all the shipping again.
So here I am with $1500 of lemon which I am not sure what can I do about it.
If you are going to buy this scope too, I wish you good luck!!!

Hi,
Oh Sh*t...
can feel your pain by just reading it...
Very sad, but that's the risk when buy directly from oversea...
Anyway, I think some of the scope expert here might be able to help you with it. It's a waste to let 5" of triplet ED glasses to collect dust.
Have a nice day.

Judging from yuor experience, it would make sense to actually buy a plane ticket, check on the spot and carry it back yourself, safe from the boots of the their airport staff..it may even turn out cheaper too.

i am sorry to hear of your experience, clittle. We have tried bringing in 4 to 5 inch refractors from PRC before. But due to their poor physical conditions of their first few samples, it was never realised. Problems from collimation, cob-webs around their objectives (yes!), to dented tubes (even with external packaging boxes completely intact and fine. Ever since this experience, I have turned into a Japanese manufacturer believer. At least even if the tubes are outsourced and made in China (Vixen, etc), the Japanese host company will still check and verify the condition of the tubes before shipment to us. Yes, the price is more, but it is good to have a peace of mind sometimes, rather than risk getting lemons, and worse, poor resale value afterwards.
The cheapest return ticket to BeiJing would cost about $900-$1000 now. That's provided you can get the Visa to China because due to Olympics, even Sporeans would require visa.tungkian wrote:haha! yah! a tic to china is pretty cheap! and you can have a first hand inspection ur goods!
I know this because my company is China IT company and I send my staff to BeiJing all the time.
You add in 1000 bucks to your scope price and it suddenly doesn't seem so cheap now rite?
